This course is for people who deal specifically with highly hazardous substances; explosives, fumigants, vertebrate toxic agents, acutely toxic substances class 6.1A and 6.1B.

This course is designed to support students to develop their knowledge, understanding and leadership required to ensure their workplace handles hazardous substances safely, compliant to the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

Note: This course will ensure an applicant has the required competency and compliance evidence they must provide to an independent Certifier to be awarded a Certified Handler Compliance Certificate.  On successful completion of this course Safety ‘n Action can guide you through the Certified Handler Certification Application process – additional fees apply.

    Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous substances relevant to the students role

     

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the purpose and principles of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017

  2. Understand the requirements under the HSNO Act 1996 Hazardous Substances Notices, the HSWA 2015 (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 and Safe Work Instruments as they apply to those hazardous substances

  3. Describe the procedures to adopt in an emergency involving hazardous substances in accordance with organisational requirements

  4. Describe requirements relevant for a Certified Handler

  5. Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous substances relevant to the students role

Prerequisite:

  1. 31290 Demonstrate knowledge of the safe management and potential adverse effects of hazardous substances in the workplace

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
