  4. Important Changes to Crane Training

From 1 September 2025, key updates to crane-related unit standards are being rolled out across the training industry. These updates are designed to lift the overall quality and safety of training across New Zealand.

What's Changing?

The following unit standards are being updated:

  • US 30072 – Slinging Regular Loads
This will now be delivered as a standalone one-day course across the industry.
(No change for Safety 'n Action)

  • US 3800 – Overhead Gantry Crane
Will now require a separate additional day of training.
(No change for Safety 'n Action)

  • US 16617 – Truck Loader Crane
Will now require a separate additional day of training.
(No change for Safety 'n Action)

Other providers may need to update their course delivery to meet these new standards. Safety 'n Action has already been running these as separate courses for years, so no changes are required on our end.

New Workplace Experience Requirements

For students to complete these unit standards, new on-the-job experience requirements have been introduced:

  • Truck Loader Crane (US 16617): 80 hours or 40 lifts

  • Overhead Gantry Crane (US 3800): 50 hours or 25 lifts

These experience hours are designed to ensure operators are confident, capable, and well prepared for real-world situations.

Alternative Training Options Available

If your team members are not able to meet the new experience requirements, we offer the following alternatives:

  • Non-unit standard courses for Overhead Gantry and Truck Loader Cranes

  • Verification of Competency (VoC) assessments for experienced operators

These options ensure your staff can still get trained and verified to work safely.
