Confined Space Training Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about confined space and gas detection training in New Zealand.
Safety 'n Action offers a comprehensive range of confined space and gas detection courses, including Confined Space and Gas Detection, Confined Space - Entrant Only, Atmospheric Testing and Gas Detection, Safety Observer, Breathing Apparatus Operational, Breathing Apparatus Rescue, refresher courses, and industry-specific training. Courses are delivered face to face at training centres across New Zealand or at your workplace for company bookings.
Anyone who enters, supervises, observes, or performs work in a confined space should complete appropriate confined space training. This includes workers in construction, manufacturing, utilities, wastewater, energy, food processing, infrastructure, maintenance, and industrial operations.
Yes. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs must ensure workers are trained, competent, and able to safely carry out confined space work. Employers must identify hazards, implement safe systems of work, and provide appropriate training before workers enter confined spaces.
You'll learn how to identify confined space hazards, complete entry permits, conduct atmospheric testing, use gas detection equipment, understand entrant and observer responsibilities, implement emergency procedures, and safely plan and carry out confined space work using industry best practice.
Atmospheric testing checks whether the air inside a confined space is safe before entry. It identifies hazards such as oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, or flammable atmospheres. Workers are trained to use gas detection equipment correctly, interpret readings, and respond safely if hazardous conditions are detected.
The full Confined Space and Gas Detection course includes NZQA Unit Standards 17599 (Plan a Confined Space Entry), 18426 (Demonstrate Knowledge of Hazards Associated with Confined Spaces), and 25510 (Operate an Atmospheric Testing Device). Additional elective unit standards are available for specific industries.
Some confined space courses require participants to have at least three months of relevant industry experience before attending. Entry requirements may vary depending on the course, so it's important to check the course information or contact Safety 'n Action before booking.
Safety 'n Action delivers confined space and gas detection training nationwide through its training centres, and trainers can also deliver courses onsite at your workplace or another suitable location for company bookings.
Course duration depends on the training selected. The full Confined Space and Gas Detection course is delivered over two days (16 hours), while refresher training and specialist courses may be shorter depending on the learning outcomes.
Yes. Safety 'n Action provides onsite confined space and gas detection training for businesses throughout New Zealand. Company training can be delivered at your workplace using practical scenarios that reflect your work environment, making it an efficient option for training multiple employees.
The Confined Space Entrant Only course focuses on the hazards, controls, and responsibilities of workers entering confined spaces.
