Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the hazards and controls used when working with confined spaces.

Overview

This course will provide you with knowledge of the legislative requirements and an understanding of how to identify the associated hazards, applicable control measures and monitoring and testing requirements when working with confined spaces. It will also cover the responsibilities and duties of people entering or conducting observation duties.

In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, Safety ‘n Action had this course pre moderated and approved by our standard setting body, The Skills Organisation.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise the legislative requirements associated with working in a confined space
  • Assess the level of harm from hazards and determine the suitable controls needed
  • Demonstrate knowledge of gases, their causes, their harmful effects and correctly select and explain the purpose and operation of gas detectors including the safety checks and certificates required
  • Understand the responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces
  • Determine the legal documentation requirements for the entry, define the necessary considerations on an entry permit form, complete an entry permit form and all additional relevant documentation

Entry Criteria:

All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.

The course covers hazard identification, gas types and their harmful effects, gas detection equipment, permit documentation, entry requirements and the responsibilities of both entrants and observers. Successful participants achieve NZQA Unit Standard 18426.
The Confined Space Entrant Only course focuses on the knowledge required to safely enter and observe a confined space, covering NZQA Unit Standard 18426. The full Confined Space and Gas Detection course is a more comprehensive two-day programme that also covers planning confined space entries and operating atmospheric testing devices, awarding Unit Standards 17599, 18426 and 25510. The Entrant Only course is ideal for workers who need foundational confined space knowledge, while the full course suits those responsible for planning and managing confined space entries.
This course is suitable for workers who enter or observe confined spaces as part of their role, including maintenance workers, tradespeople, engineers, construction workers, utility workers, manufacturing staff and contractors. It is ideal for workers who need nationally recognised confined space knowledge but do not require the full planning and atmospheric testing qualifications covered in the complete Confined Space and Gas Detection course.
The course includes NZQA Unit Standard 18426 – Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces (Level 3, 4 Credits). This nationally recognised qualification is widely accepted by employers throughout New Zealand and demonstrates competency in understanding confined space hazards, controls and legislative requirements.
Participants learn how to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of gases, their causes and harmful effects
  • Correctly select and explain the purpose and operation of gas detectors including safety checks and certificates

  • Complete entry permit forms and all additional relevant documentation
While New Zealand legislation does not specify a particular training course by name, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires employers to ensure workers are trained, instructed and supervised to work safely in confined spaces. Many employers require workers to hold NZQA Unit Standard 18426 as evidence that they understand confined space hazards and legislative requirements before allowing them to enter or observe confined space work.
The course is delivered over one full day (8 hours) with a maximum of 12 participants per session. It is available as a company booking at Safety 'n Action training centres nationwide or delivered at your own workplace anywhere in New Zealand. This course has been pre-moderated and approved by The Skills Organisation to meet NZQA Consent to Assess requirements.
Participants should have at least three months of relevant industry work experience before attending the course. Students must also have written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 or IELTS 5.5 to successfully complete the NZQA assessment. Valid photo identification must be brought on the day of training for identity verification.
