Refresh your knowledge and technical skills to effectively plan, observe and safely enter a confined space.

Overview

This refresher course will provide you with up to date skills and knowledge, as an entrant or observer, to identify the types of confined spaces and hazards and risks associated with working in a confined space. It will also reinforce your understanding of atmospheric testing and equipment required to establish a planned and safe entry, as well as the correct emergency procedures in the event of a rescue.

Refresher Information:
To remain compliant with Health and Safety legislation and industry 'good practice' guidelines, students are generally required to refresh their training every two years. When booking a refresher course, Safety ’n Action will require evidence of the student's NZQA record of achievement displaying the relevant unit standard/s to the course they are attending. On successful completion of the course, the students Go Safe card will be updated and reissued with a new refresher date. (Please note no unit standards will be uploaded to NZQA).
If students are unable to provide us with this information, they will need to attend a full course to gain the unit standard/s. Alternatively, if the student has completed prior training and does not hold the applicable NZQA unit standard/s, on request we can provide the student with an attendance certificate only.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify hazards and controls within confined spaces
  2. Develop an emergency procedure plan for a confined space
  3. Complete required documentation for a confined space entry
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces and their permit notification and implementation requirements
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements
  6. Describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering; or conducting observation duties for a confined space
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of atmospheric testing in potentially hazardous environments
  8. Conduct atmospheric tests and interpret and respond to atmospheric testing results

The Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher is a half-day face-to-face course that updates the knowledge and technical skills of experienced confined space workers. The course reinforces hazard identification, atmospheric testing, permit requirements, emergency procedures and gas detection equipment for both confined space entrants and observers. It is designed for workers who hold the relevant NZQA unit standards and need to maintain their competency in line with New Zealand health and safety legislation and industry good practice.
To remain compliant with New Zealand health and safety legislation and industry good practice guidelines, confined space training should generally be refreshed every two years. Regular refresher training ensures workers maintain current knowledge of confined space hazards, atmospheric testing procedures, emergency response requirements and safe entry procedures.
This refresher is designed for workers who have previously completed confined space and gas detection training and hold the relevant NZQA unit standards on their Record of Achievement. It is suitable for maintenance workers, engineers, utility workers, tradespeople, water industry workers, electricity supply workers, petrochemical workers and anyone who enters or observes confined spaces as part of their role.
The course refreshes the following unit standards:
  • Unit Standard 17599 – Plan a confined space entry (Level 4, 5 Credits)
  • Unit Standard 18426 – Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces (Level 3, 4 Credits)
  • Unit Standard 25510 – Operate an atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely (Level 3, 4 Credits)
Optional elective unit standards available for refreshing include 3058 (gas tests for energy and chemical plant), 19207 (water industry confined space) and 18037 (electricity supply industry confined space entry).
No. As this is a refresher course, no new unit standards are uploaded to NZQA. On successful completion, Safety 'n Action updates and reissues the participant's Go Safe card with a new refresher date. If you cannot provide evidence of the relevant NZQA unit standards, you will need to complete the full Confined Space and Gas Detection course. If you have prior training without the applicable unit standards, an attendance certificate may be available on request.
The face-to-face Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher is a half-day course (4 hours) delivered in person at a Safety 'n Action training centre or onsite at your workplace. It includes both theory and practical atmospheric testing components. The Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher Webinar is delivered online over 6 hours and covers the theory component, making it ideal for workers in remote locations or those wanting to refresh without travelling to a training centre.
The course refreshes knowledge of:
