Manage hazardous substances safely, confidently, and in line with the law.
This course builds the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely work with and manage hazardous substances in the workplace. Learners will explore how hazardous substances are classified under HSNO and GHS, how to interpret labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and the potential health and environmental impacts of exposure.
The course focuses on applying the hierarchy of controls, selecting and using appropriate PPE, and following organisational procedures for safe handling, storage, disposal, and emergency response. It also outlines supervisory and managerial responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, ensuring learners can meet legal obligations while protecting people, property, and the environment.
Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Key Learning Outcomes:
- Explain how hazardous substances are classified under HSNO and GHS systems and interpret hazard information.
- Identify the potential acute and chronic health effects and environmental impacts of hazardous substances.
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to manage risks associated with hazardous substances in the workplace.
- Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine safe handling, storage, emergency response, and disposal requirements.
- Implement organisational procedures to support safe storage, handling, monitoring, and emergency management of hazardous substances.
- Meet supervisory and managerial responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 when managing hazardous substances.
- Define hazardous substances and explain their potential adverse effects on people and the environment.
- Identify hazardous substances commonly used in their workplace and interpret GHS labels and pictograms.
- Locate and use information from Safety Data Sheets to support safe handling, storage, and disposal.
- Apply workplace controls to minimise risks associated with hazardous substances.
- Select and correctly use appropriate PPE when working with hazardous substances.
- Safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous substances in accordance with organisational procedures.
- Respond appropriately to spills or uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances, including emergency actions and reporting requirements.
Entry Criteria:

All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
