ConstructSafe is New Zealand's nationally recognised health and safety competency assessment for the construction industry. It helps employers verify that workers have the fundamental knowledge needed to work safely on construction sites through a combination of knowledge-based questions and practical safety assessments.
ConstructSafe Tier 1 is suitable for anyone working on or entering a construction site, including labourers, apprentices, contractors, tradespeople, engineers, supervisors, project managers and site visitors. Many principal contractors require workers to hold a current ConstructSafe assessment before being granted site access.
The ConstructSafe Tier 1 Health and Safety Competency Test assesses knowledge across key construction safety topics including:
  • General health and safety
  • Working at heights
  • Confined and restricted spaces
  • Chemicals and hazardous substances
  • Plant and machinery
  • Traffic management
  • Utilities and underground services
  • Emergency procedures
These topics reflect the core safety knowledge expected across New Zealand construction sites.
ConstructSafe is a competency assessment rather than a training course. It evaluates your existing health and safety knowledge and practical understanding of safe behaviours expected on construction sites. Candidates are encouraged to review the ConstructSafe Tier 1 Health and Safety Competency Framework before attending.
If you do not pass your first ConstructSafe assessment, you receive a second attempt at no additional cost. If you are unsuccessful on your second attempt, a fee applies for the third attempt, while every second assessment attempt thereafter is free under the ConstructSafe testing policy.
After successfully passing the ConstructSafe Tier 1 assessment, you will receive confirmation by email, and your result is recorded in the ConstructSafe system where employers can verify your competency. You will also receive a ConstructSafe card showing your successful assessment.
