Safe management of hazardous substances for leaders responsible for chemical storage, handling, and worker safety.

This course is designed for managers and supervisors who are responsible for the storage, handling, and oversight of hazardous substances in the workplace. The programme provides learners with the knowledge required to safely manage hazardous substances, understand their potential adverse effects on people and the environment, and ensure compliance with New Zealand health and safety legislation. Learners will gain an understanding of HSNO and GHS classification systems, risk management and hierarchy of controls, safety data sheets (SDS), emergency response, and monitoring requirements. The course supports leaders to meet their due diligence obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and to effectively supervise workers who use or work around hazardous substances.

US 31290 is a prerequisite for obtaining a Controlled Substance Licence

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explain how hazardous substances are classified under HSNO and GHS systems and interpret hazard information.
  2. Identify the potential acute and chronic health effects and environmental impacts of hazardous substances.
  3. Apply the hierarchy of controls to manage risks associated with hazardous substances in the workplace.
  4. Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine safe handling, storage, emergency response, and disposal requirements.
  5. Implement organisational procedures to support safe storage, handling, monitoring, and emergency management of hazardous substances.
  6. Meet supervisory and managerial responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 when managing hazardous substances.

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
