How do I get my Class 4 Truck Licence?

A Class 4 licence is required for driving large rigid trucks and buses with three or more axles, and a Gross Laden Weight (GLW) over 18,000kg. It’s the next step after a Class 2 licence and is essential for careers in heavy transport, freight, construction, and passenger services.

What is a Class 4 Licence?

  • A Class 4 licence Lets you drive large rigid trucks over 18,000kg with 3+ axles.

  • Covers vehicles such as dump trucks, coaches, buses, and bulk haulage trucks.

Please note this Doesn’t allow you to drive combination vehicles (Class 3 or Class 5).

How to Get a Class 4 Learner Licence

To apply for your Class 4 learner licence (4L), you must:

  • Hold a full Class 2 licence for at least 6 months (or 3 months if you're 25 or older).

  • Fill out a DL1 form at a driver licensing agent (VTNZ or AA).

  • Provide proof of identity, photo, and signature.

  • Pass an eyesight check (and medical certificate if required).
  • Pay the application fee ($27.10).

Please Note: Unlike the Class 2, there is no additional theory test - Class 4 uses the same heavy vehicle Road Code theory covered at Class 2. 

Moving to a Full Class 4 Licence

To move on to your full Class 4 Licence you must:

  • Hold your Class 4 learner licence for at least 6 months, or
  • Complete an NZTA-approved accelerated course to progress sooner — training that  Safety n Action can deliver to help you move straight to your full Class 4 licence. 

To obtain your full licence, you’ll need to:

  • Apply at a driver licensing agent.
  • Provide identity documents and a current medical certificate.
  • Sit and pass a practical driving test in a Class 4 vehicle or present an approved course completion certificate.
