Completing our NZTA approved course will eliminate the learner licence period.

A Class 5 Licence allows you to drive a vehicle combination 25,000kg and over. Our course includes both a Class 5 Learners and a Class 5 Full licence - we manage the entire licencing process for you. The course fee includes theory training (unit standards 24809 and 17577), learner licence fees and a practical assessment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  1. A deposit payment for individual bookings is required to secure your booking.

  2. If you do not have your 5L truck learners licence you must register for the three-day course.
  3. Please note: The transmission of the truck cannot be confirmed due to the nature of our courses and truck availability. We recommend that if you are unfamiliar with a manual transmission you take advantage of an additional lesson prior to assessment. Please contact us to discuss this.
  4. Converting an overseas licence?: If you are converting an overseas licence and currently hold a Class 2, 4, or 5 licence with a supervisor condition, you can attend our course to work towards having this condition removed. To do so, you’ll need to apply for an exemption using the DL4 form available on the NZTA website. We recommend confirming with NZTA beforehand to ensure your endorsement will be accepted on completion of the course.

Please bring along your NZ driver licence - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring your NZ driver licence with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Stage 1 - 1 Day 5L Learners Licence Theory.

    Sit your licence test when you are ready.

  • Stage 2 - 1 Day Logbook & Fatigue 24089, If you hold unit standard 24089, it is current and you can provide evidence (course certificate), you can qualify for the reduced course options
  • Stage 3 - 1 Day Class 5 Licence theory for unit standard 17577
  • Stage 4 - Allow 2 hours Be available for a practical training and assessment across the following 2 days.

Prerequisites:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Held a full Class 4 licence for at least six months if under 25 or at least three months if 25 or over
  • Current Driver’s Medical certificate. (A driver’s medical is valid for 5 years once lodged with NZTA). This can be obtained from your Doctor.

All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.

A Class 5 Truck Licence allows you to legally drive combination vehicles with a gross combined weight of 25,000kg and over, including truck-and-trailer units, articulated trucks and heavy freight combinations. It is the highest class of heavy vehicle licence available in New Zealand.
The 1-Day Class 5 Truck Licence course is designed for drivers who already meet the eligibility requirements, including holding a current full Class 4 licence for the required minimum period and meeting NZTA medical requirements. If you do not already hold a Class 5 learner licence, you may need to complete the longer Class 5 course instead.
The course includes Class 5 theory training, NZQA unit standard training, learner licence processing where applicable, practical training and a practical driving assessment. Safety 'n Action manages the licensing process to help eligible drivers progress towards obtaining their full Class 5 licence.

The Class 5 (1 Day) course includes two days of theory, followed by practical driver training and an assessment completed over the following two days. Completing the NZTA-approved course eliminates the normal learner licence waiting period for eligible drivers.

The practical assessment vehicle may have a manual transmission. If you are unfamiliar with driving a manual heavy vehicle, Safety 'n Action recommends arranging an additional driving lesson before your assessment to improve your confidence and chances of success.
