This course is designed for people working on sites where cranes in use and there is a requirement to communicate with crane operators at a more advanced level, such as with complex loads.
Overview
This includes building and construction sites, large scale manufacturing and processing, ports and stevedoring operations or any other environments where cranes are used.
Complex loads are also referred to as irregular loads. They have one or more of the following characteristics: unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading, irregular shape and proportions with or without set lifting points.
On course completion trainees will be able to apply theory and skills in slinging complex or irregular loads This course is based on coaching and assessment only and is designed for trainees with experience in slinging complex loads. The assessment will be completed within the work environment.
Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Explain the types of work permits
Describe the purpose and use of types of lifting equipment
Identify factors affecting the safe operation of the crane
Select lifting equipment and apply sling and lifting gear to the load
Select and apply packing and dunnage to crane lift situations

Everything you need to know about Complex Loads training in New Zealand.
The Complex Loads course is a two-day practical training programme designed for experienced workers who need to prepare and sling complex or irregular loads for crane operations. The course teaches participants how to select appropriate lifting equipment, apply slings and lifting gear to complex loads, use packing and dunnage correctly and safely communicate with crane operators at an advanced level. Successful participants achieve NZQA Unit Standard 3801.
A complex load, also referred to as an irregular load, is any load that has one or more of the following characteristics: unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading, an irregular shape or proportions, or loads with or without set lifting points. Complex loads require more advanced slinging knowledge and technique than regular loads because their unpredictable weight distribution and shape create additional risks during crane lifting operations.
This course is designed for experienced dogmen, riggers and crane workers who regularly work with complex or irregular loads on construction sites, large-scale manufacturing and processing facilities, ports and stevedoring operations or any other environment where cranes are used. Participants must already hold NZQA Unit Standard 30072 (Demonstrate knowledge of slinging regular loads) or Unit Standard 3789 (Sling and communicate loads during crane operation) before attending.
The course awards NZQA Unit Standard 3801 – Prepare and sling complex loads for crane operations (Level 4, 25 Credits). This nationally recognised qualification demonstrates advanced competency in slinging complex and irregular loads and is recognised by employers across New Zealand's construction, manufacturing, ports and crane industries.
Before attending the Complex Loads course, participants must hold either:
NZQA Unit Standard 30072 – Demonstrate knowledge of slinging regular loads safely
NZQA Unit Standard 3789 – Sling and communicate loads during crane operation
Participants must also have practical experience in slinging complex loads in the workplace, as the course is based on coaching and assessment rather than initial training.
Participants learn how to:
Explain the types of work permits used in crane operations
Describe the purpose and use of different types of lifting equipment
Identify factors affecting the safe operation of a crane
Select appropriate lifting equipment and apply slings and lifting gear to complex loads
Select and apply packing and dunnage to crane lift situations
Prepare and sling complex loads safely and competently
The Complex Loads course is based on coaching and assessment rather than initial operator training. It is designed for workers who already have practical experience in slinging complex loads and need their competency assessed in a real workplace environment. The assessment is completed within the participant's own work environment using the loads and equipment they encounter on the job.
The Complex Loads course is delivered over two days with a maximum of 7 participants per session. Training is available as a company booking delivered at your own workplace anywhere in New Zealand, allowing assessment to be completed in a realistic working environment using the actual loads and lifting equipment your team uses every day.
Complex Loads training is particularly important in industries where irregular or non-standard loads are regularly lifted by crane, including:
Commercial and civil construction
Large-scale manufacturing and processing
Ports and stevedoring
Heavy engineering
Infrastructure projects
Petrochemical plants
Energy and utilities
Industrial maintenance
Any workplace that regularly lifts loads with unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading or irregular shapes should ensure workers hold the relevant complex loads qualification.
Safety 'n Action is one of New Zealand's leading workplace health and safety training providers. The Complex Loads course is delivered by experienced crane industry trainers at your own workplace using your actual loads, equipment and operating conditions. This workplace-based coaching and assessment approach ensures participants develop real competency in slinging complex loads safely while gaining nationally recognised NZQA Unit Standard 3801.
