Forklift with Mounted Safety Platform Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about forklift mounted safety platform training in New Zealand.

A forklift mounted safety platform, also known as a forklift safety cage or PILT safety cage, is an approved work platform that attaches to the forks of a powered industrial lift truck (forklift). It is used to safely elevate workers to carry out work at height in workplaces such as warehouses, manufacturing facilities and construction sites. The platform must be purpose-built, approved for use and used in accordance with New Zealand health and safety requirements.
Yes, it is legal to use a forklift mounted safety platform in New Zealand under certain conditions. The platform must be a purpose-built, approved safety cage specifically designed for use with a forklift, and operators must be trained and competent in its safe use. Completing NZQA Unit Standard 18409 training demonstrates competency in the safe use of forklift mounted safety platforms.

Using a forklift mounted safety platform involves significant risks, including falls from height, forklift instability and crushing hazards. Under New Zealand's Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, employers must ensure workers are trained and competent before using elevated work platforms. Completing NZQA Unit Standard 18409 training helps operators understand safe operating procedures, pre-operational checks and how to manage risks when working at height using a forklift safety cage.
