This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge of workplace hazardous substances and the changes that have been rolled out with the latest EPA notice. (Hazardous substance Notice 2020) ; understand safe storage and handling and learn how to identify, select and apply legislated and other controls designed to minimise the exposure of workers to these risks, and ensure the proper reporting required under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

This course is designed for those responsible for the management, storage, use, disposal, and handling of hazardous substances in a workplace. This would apply to store persons, team leaders, supervisors, shift managers, safety officers, purchasing officers, and other managers responsible for the PCBU Hazardous Substances controls.

This course is a refresher course only and therefore the learner will not gain any unit standards upon the completion of this course, they will, however, refresh their unit standards held.

Refresher Information:
To remain compliant with Health and Safety legislation and industry 'good practice' guidelines, students are generally required to refresh their training every two years. When booking a refresher course, Safety ’n Action will require evidence of the student's NZQA record of achievement displaying the relevant unit standard/s to the course they are attending. On successful completion of the course, the student's Go Safe card will be updated and reissued with a new refresher date. (Please note no unit standards will be uploaded to NZQA).
If students are unable to provide us with this information, they will need to attend a full course to gain the unit standard/s. Alternatively, if the student has completed prior training and does not hold the applicable NZQA unit standard/s, on request we can provide the student with an attendance certificate only.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of classifying hazardous substances ( GHS Rev 7 system)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of procedures relating to the uncontrolled release of hazardous substances
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the technical vocabulary and documentation used for hazardous substances
  4. Understand the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options
  5. Know the precautions to take relating to the storage and handling of hazardous substances in the workplace
  6. Understand responsibilities relating to the safe storage, handling, and disposal controls compliant to the legislation and workplace requirements

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
