Forklift F Endorsement Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your Forklift F Endorsement in New Zealand.

A Forklift F Endorsement is an addition to your New Zealand driver licence that legally allows you to drive a forklift on public roads. Without an F Endorsement, forklift operators are only permitted to operate on private property. The endorsement is issued by NZTA and requires the successful completion of NZQA Unit Standards 10851 and 18496.
You only need an F Endorsement if you need to drive a forklift on a public road or in a publicly accessible area. If you are only operating a forklift on private property such as a warehouse, factory or yard, a standard Forklift Operator Certificate is sufficient. However, if your work requires you to cross a road, drive between sites, or use any publicly accessible areas, an F Endorsement is legally required.
To obtain a Forklift F Endorsement in New Zealand you must:
  • Hold a full current driver licence (other than a motorcycle licence)
  • Complete approved training covering NZQA Unit Standards 10851 and 18496
  • Submit your application to NZTA with evidence of successful completion of both unit standards
Safety 'n Action's F Endorsement course prepares you for all of these requirements.
The Forklift F Endorsement course covers NZQA Unit Standard 18496 – Demonstrate knowledge and skills for the driving of a forklift on a road for endorsement F (Level 3, 2 Credits). This unit standard, combined with NZQA Unit Standard 10851 from the Forklift Operator course, must be provided to NZTA as part of the F Endorsement application process.
Yes. The F Endorsement course is designed for certified forklift operators who already hold NZQA Unit Standard 10851 from the Forklift Operator course. NZTA requires evidence of both Unit Standard 10851 and Unit Standard 18496 before they will issue an F Endorsement on your driver licence. If you do not yet hold Unit Standard 10851, Safety 'n Action also offers a combined Forklift Operator and F Endorsement course.
During the F Endorsement course you will learn how to:
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections and start-up procedures
  • Demonstrate safe forklift driving on public roads
  • Manage environmental and traffic hazards
  • Safely park and shut down a forklift on the road
  • Understand the legal requirements for driving a forklift on New Zealand roads
