Safe handling of everyday workplace chemicals for frontline workers.

This course is designed for workers who use hazardous substances as part of their day-to-day tasks, such as cleaning, maintenance, and operational roles. It provides learners with the practical skills and underpinning knowledge required to safely handle, store, use, and dispose of hazardous substances in accordance with workplace procedures and New Zealand health and safety legislation.
The course has a strong practical focus, including the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), identification of GHS pictograms, correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe decanting and storage, and responding to spills or uncontrolled releases. It does not cover managerial responsibilities such as procurement, inventory control at a management level, or regulatory decision-making for hazardous substance storage thresholds.

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define hazardous substances and explain their potential adverse effects on people and the environment.

  2. Identify hazardous substances commonly used in their workplace and interpret GHS labels and pictograms.

  3. Locate and use information from Safety Data Sheets to support safe handling, storage, and disposal.

  4. Apply workplace controls to minimise risks associated with hazardous substances.

  5. Select and correctly use appropriate PPE when working with hazardous substances.
  6. Safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous substances in accordance with organisational procedures.

  7. Respond appropriately to spills or uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances, including emergency actions and reporting requirements.

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
