Practical guidance for the safe initial use and operation of common power tools in the workplace.

This course provides practical, risk‑based guidance for the safe setup, initial running, and operation of common power tools in the workplace.

Learners are introduced to key hazards and controls, including pre‑use inspections, guarding, electrical and battery safety, correct handling and body stance, PPE selection, and basic post‑use care.

Aligned to HSWA duties and good‑practice guidance, the course supports safer work practices during induction or refresher training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify common hazards associated with the initial operation of power tools.
  2. Carry out pre-use inspections and basic functional checks in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions.
  3. Demonstrate safe operating practices when using selected power tools.
  4. Apply appropriate risk controls, including PPE selection and safe work positioning.
  5. Explain basic post‑use care, storage, and fault‑reporting requirements.

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.
