  4. Verification of Competency / VOC Telescopic Toplift

The Telescopic Toplift VOC is designed for operators who need to demonstrate safe and competent use of toplift machinery.

This Verification of Competency (VOC) confirms that operators of telescopic toplifts can safely and effectively handle container movements and related lifting tasks. The assessment ensures compliance with workplace and safety standards while verifying operators are current in their knowledge and practical skills.

Competency Assessed:

Operators will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of equipment – correctly identifying load ratings, controls, attachments, PPE requirements, and safe operating conditions.

  • Pre-start inspection – completing entry and seatbelt checks, ensuring controls are in the correct position, inspecting lifting gear, and following SOP standards.
  • Practical application – safely operating the toplift in real-world tasks, including:
  • Forward travelling and reversing with load awareness
  • Picking up, carrying, and placing 20ft and 40ft containers
  • Stacking, de-stacking, and handling non-container lifts
  • Loading and unloading trucks without damage or risk
  • Parking, shutdown, and post-use procedures
  • Hazard reporting and maintaining environmental awareness

Operators will be evaluated on their ability to carry out these tasks consistently and safely, ensuring that their previously achieved unit standards remain current and practically applied in the workplace.

Outcome:

On successful completion of this Verification of Competency, operators will receive a report outlining their level of competency across each assessed area. The report confirms whether the operator is competent, requires supervision, or requires further training. This ensures toplift operators can safely and effectively carry out container handling, lifting gear checks, and hazard management in compliance with workplace and safety standards.
