Overview
This interactive seminar will give you a broad overview of the dangers of Asbestos, where you will likely encounter Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), as well as how to safely handle it, including the removal and disposal of up to 10m2 of non-friable asbestos.
Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.
Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Asbestos awareness training is essential for anyone who works in or around buildings that may contain asbestos, including construction workers, demolition workers, builders, plumbers, electricians, roofers, painters, renovation contractors, facilities managers, property managers and maintenance workers. Under New Zealand's Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, employers must ensure workers who may encounter asbestos are trained and informed before commencing work.
Yes. Asbestos was widely used in New Zealand buildings constructed or renovated before 2000 and can still be found in a large number of homes, commercial buildings and industrial facilities across the country. Common locations include roofing materials, floor tiles, wall linings, ceiling tiles, pipe lagging, insulation and textured ceilings. Anyone working on buildings built before 2000 should receive asbestos awareness training before starting work.

Under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, the removal of more than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos (Class B) or any amount of friable asbestos (Class A) requires a WorkSafe-issued Asbestos Removal Licence. Untrained workers must not disturb or remove asbestos. The Asbestos Awareness Seminar covers removal of up to 10m2 of non-friable asbestos, which can be performed without a licence by a trained person following correct procedures. For larger removals, workers must complete the Non-Friable Asbestos Class B course.
Non-friable asbestos is asbestos-containing material that is in a solid, bound state and cannot be crumbled or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry. Common examples include asbestos cement sheeting and floor tiles. Friable asbestos is in a loose, powdery state or can be easily crumbled, making it far more dangerous as fibres are released into the air more readily. Removal of friable asbestos always requires a Class A Asbestos Removal Licence issued by WorkSafe.
