Recognise asbestos risks, work safely around asbestos, and understand your legal responsibilities.

This course provides learners with the knowledge required to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), understand the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, recognise where asbestos may be found in workplaces and buildings, and follow appropriate procedures when asbestos is identified. Learners will develop an understanding of asbestos regulations, safe work practices, identification processes, reporting requirements, and asbestos management procedures applicable to their role.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify asbestos-containing materials, their common uses, and locations where asbestos may be present in workplaces and buildings.
  2. Describe the differences between friable and non-friable asbestos, how asbestos fibres are released, and the health effects associated with exposure.
  3. Follow the correct process for identifying potential asbestos on a worksite, including consulting asbestos registers and management plans.
  4. Describe the procedures for managing asbestos in the workplace, including identification, isolation, reporting, removal, and disposal requirements.

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.

The asbestos training you need depends on the work you perform. Workers who may encounter asbestos need appropriate information, training and instruction for their role. Safety 'n Action's Demonstrate Knowledge of Asbestos course covers asbestos identification, health risks, safe work procedures, asbestos registers and management plans, and the requirements for managing asbestos in New Zealand workplaces. Workers carrying out licensed asbestos removal require additional Class A or Class B asbestos removal training.
Asbestos awareness training is relevant to workers who may encounter asbestos-containing materials (ACM) during their work, particularly people working in construction, demolition, renovation, maintenance and property-related environments. Training helps workers recognise potential asbestos, understand the risks of exposure and know what to do when suspected asbestos is identified.
NZQA Unit Standard 2138, Demonstrate knowledge of asbestos and safety procedures, develops knowledge of asbestos-containing materials, asbestos health risks and the safety procedures used when asbestos may be present. Safety 'n Action's Demonstrate Knowledge of Asbestos course includes Unit Standard 2138 and covers identification, asbestos registers, management plans and workplace asbestos procedures.
Asbestos cannot always be identified reliably just by looking at a material. Workers should know where asbestos-containing materials are commonly found and check available asbestos information, including the workplace asbestos register and asbestos management plan. Safety 'n Action's asbestos training teaches learners how to recognise potential ACM and follow the correct process when suspected asbestos is encountered.
Friable asbestos is asbestos-containing material that can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry, creating a greater potential for fibres to become airborne. Non-friable asbestos is typically bonded within another material, such as asbestos cement products. The distinction is important because different training and licensing requirements apply to Class A friable and Class B non-friable asbestos removal.
Workers who do not remove asbestos may still require appropriate asbestos information, training and instruction if their work could expose them to asbestos. This can include people involved in construction, refurbishment, demolition, electrical, plumbing, maintenance and property work. Asbestos knowledge training helps workers recognise potential asbestos and respond appropriately before disturbing the material.
Safety 'n Action's Demonstrate Knowledge of Asbestos course is a four-hour, face-to-face course with full assessment. It covers asbestos-containing materials, health effects, friable and non-friable asbestos, asbestos registers and management plans, and procedures for identifying, isolating, reporting, removing and disposing of asbestos.
