This course will give you an in-depth understanding of the duties of a Fire and Emergency Warden in accordance with the law, as well as the practical skills to effectively evacuate the workplace in event of a fire or emergency.

In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, Safety ‘n Action had this course pre moderated and approved by our standard setting body, Industry Skills Boards (ISBs).

Students need to have 3 months of work experience in the industry prior to doing the course.

Please bring along your ID - We need to verify the identity of students in attendance, please bring ID with you on the day of training.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of evacuation requirements for a particular workplace or site.
  2. Explain the duties of a Fire and Emergency Warden in accordance with the law
  3. Select and implement a strategy to evacuate the workplace

Entry Criteria:

  1. All students are required to have a level of written and oral English equivalent to NCEA level 1 (year 11) or IELTS 5.5 or higher, to be eligible to attend our courses. The person responsible for making bookings or authorising attendance on the course must agree to these Terms and Conditions prior to acceptance of their student(s) onto the course. Where a student does not meet our English language requirement a reader/writer must be supplied by the student or the person responsible for authorising the student’s attendance. The reader/writer cannot be another student attending the same course.

The Fire and Emergency Warden course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out the duties of a Fire and Emergency Warden in the workplace. Participants learn how to assist with emergency evacuations, understand workplace evacuation procedures, respond appropriately during emergencies, and meet the requirements of NZQA Unit Standard 18408. This training is suitable for workplaces across New Zealand.
This course is designed for employees who have been appointed as Fire Wardens or Emergency Wardens, as well as supervisors, managers, Health and Safety Representatives, and anyone responsible for implementing workplace emergency procedures. It is suitable for organisations in manufacturing, warehousing, construction, healthcare, education, retail, logistics, offices, and many other industries.
Participants learn how to:
  • Understand workplace evacuation requirements
  • Explain the duties and legal responsibilities of a Fire and Emergency Warden
  • Identify evacuation routes and assembly areas
  • Select appropriate evacuation strategies
  • Support emergency planning and emergency response procedures

The course prepares participants to confidently perform Fire and Emergency Warden duties in accordance with New Zealand workplace health and safety requirements.
Successful participants achieve NZQA Unit Standard 18408 – Demonstrate knowledge of fire and emergency warden duties in the workplace (Level 3, 3 Credits). This nationally recognised qualification demonstrates competency in workplace evacuation procedures and Fire and Emergency Warden responsibilities.
While the law does not require every employee to become a Fire and Emergency Warden, New Zealand workplaces must have effective emergency procedures and appropriately trained personnel to help manage workplace evacuations where required. Many employers appoint trained Fire and Emergency Wardens to help meet their health and safety obligations and support safe evacuations during emergencies.
The Fire and Emergency Warden course is delivered over half a day (approximately 4 hours). Training includes interactive learning and assessment, giving participants the knowledge and confidence to carry out emergency warden responsibilities within their workplace.
Although NZQA Unit Standard 18408 does not have an official expiry date, employers are encouraged to provide regular refresher training whenever emergency procedures change, workplace risks are updated, or wardens need to maintain confidence and competency. Regular refresher training helps ensure emergency response procedures remain effective.
