Forklift Training Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about forklift licences, certificates and training in New Zealand.

If you're operating a forklift in a workplace, you should complete recognised forklift operator training to demonstrate competency and meet your employer's health and safety requirements. If you need to drive a forklift on a public road or any area accessible to the public, you'll also need an F endorsement added to your New Zealand driver's licence.
A Forklift Operator Certificate (NZQA Unit Standard 10851) confirms you've been trained to safely operate a forklift in the workplace. An F endorsement (NZQA Unit Standard 18496) allows you to legally drive a forklift on public roads and other publicly accessible areas, such as some car parks and shared yards. Many operators complete both qualifications to maximise their employment opportunities.
Not usually. If you only operate a forklift within a private workplace, warehouse, or restricted site, a Forklift Operator Certificate is generally sufficient. However, if you drive through any area that is considered a public road or publicly accessible, an F endorsement is required.
Industry best practice recommends completing forklift refresher training every three years to keep your knowledge and practical skills up to date. Your F endorsement remains on your driver's licence while it is current, but employers often require regular refresher training to maintain competency.
